Go Orders Continued

The Home office Press Release is here. There are obvious possibilities for abuse, particularly because the person being excluded from the home only need be arrested, not charged, with any specific offence. Given that it will require new legislation and we must all be a bit sceptical that there will be time to introduce it before the next election and the opportunity to introduce it thereafter, it may end up being filed under “interesting ideas”.

Should He Stay or Should He Go?

An interesting story here about the Labour Government’s new proposals on “Go Orders” by which the police will be able to prevent anyone arrested for a domestic violence offence from returning to their homes or “the immediate neighbourhood” for 14 days. The idea is to give the victims time to get their heads together, which is laudable in principle, but I can see a number of problems in practice. Alan Johnson is making an announcement today apparently and I will try to follow up on the discussions.
